What does it cost? How often should I clean my window treatments? The answer depends on their location and the amount of sunlight they receive. Kitchen draperies, or those in a household with smokers, should be cleaned annually, whereas those used in a guest room with minimal sunlight exposure require cleaning only once every 2 to 4 years. Those which are near uptake or heating vents, or close to windows which are often opened, should be cleaned every one to two years. Remember, window treatments don't have to look dirty to be ready for cleaning. Many of the contaminants and impurities in our atmosphere which damage the fibers of draperies are not visible to the naked eye. Constant exposure to the bright hot rays of the sun will weaken the strength of most fibers over time and can also cause varying degrees of color fading or streaking. Effects could include dry rotting of the fabric. Drapery lining, solar window tinting film and/or constant use of shades or blinds behind the drapery will reduce these negative effects of sunlight.

Will my draperies shrink? Household fabrics generally are expected to shrink about 1-2% in proper and careful cleaning. Humidity and air quality can contribute to shrinkage. Over time this shrinkage may be cumulative. Should shrinkage occur, Hallak Cleaners has specialized drapery equipment which is specifically designed to restore draperies as near to their original length as possible, while maintaining a perfectly even hemline. This equipment is available exclusively to Adjust-a-Drape licensees.

Will my drapes change color? Generally, drapes which are maintained on a regular basis will not exhibit significant color changes. If they have been in use for very long periods of time without cleaning, the dyes may have become weakened by atmospheric gases and sunlight. In such cases, there may be significant fading of the color during cleaning. This is especially true in the case of surface printed fabrics, such as chintz.

How long will I be without my window treatments? We try to make the process as smooth as possible for our clients. Depending on the size and complexity of the project you can expect it to take anywhere from 3 days to a few weeks. In some cases we will prioritize bedroom drapes and re-hang them before the entire project has been completed, in an effort to minimize your loss of privacy.

What is On-Site cleaning? On-site cleaning is a special process using specialized equipment which allows a window treatment (or walls, headboards etc.) to be cleaned without the need to remove them from the premises. This is a safe, non-toxic procedure which leave no odors behind. Most window treatments are better served by removing them and cleaning them at our facilities, but in some cases, On-Site is either the only - or the more preferable approach to servicing.

Does vacuuming my drapes do any good? Most definitely! Regular vacuuming will remove a significant amount of dust from your draperies and window treatments. This reduces the amount of abrasion that the fibers are subjected to over the course of time.
