Zoots Sudden Closing
Earlier this year, Zoots Cleaners was forced to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. With its abrupt closing, many were left wondering just what had happened. As you walk the streets of Manhattan, it may seem like dry cleaning is an easy business. After all, there are mom-and-pop shops left and right. However, it is not as easy as one thinks. While you do not have to be ‘born’ into the industry, it certainly helps to be familiar with all the responsibilities. Dry cleaners have a responsibility to their clients, the clients’ garments, employees, the environment…and the industry itself.
When Zoots was ‘born’, it stood out from many competitors with its new concepts. “The company was founded in 1998 by Todd Krasnow and Tom Stemberg, creators of Staple office supply stores and expanded steadily…” (Zoots’ 20-Year Run Ends In Bankruptcy, 2018.) In their time, Zoots’ free-standing 24-7 stores were pretty unique. Over the years, they quickly expanded along the East Coast and beyond. With fast-growing companies (in any industry), there can be complications.
