If you are unfamiliar with Hallak’s pink pride, allow us to quickly explain. Every year, we donate a portion of our October cleaning proceeds from all pink garments in hopes of finding a cure and awareness.

At Hallak, we love pink – and it doesn’t have to be ‘Hallak pink’! Along with being a great cause, it looks great. There is a shade for everyone. And yes, you can certainly wear pink in the fall.

If you lean towards a paler shade, be sure to be conscious of what you are pairing your pastels with. Dye transfer is a real thing – and can be quite difficult to ‘fix’. Chanel, Givenchy, Christian Dior…these high-end fashion houses’ couture garments show strict adherence to quality requirements by The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.So how do you find yourself showcasing your haute couture pieces at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week?

What is Couture Fashion

Let’s answer the question – “what is couture fashion?” Otherwise known as haute couture, this level of fashion represents the highest pinnacle. These custom-fitted garments are crafted from start to finish.

Unlike ready-to-wear- garments, couture pieces are created for individuals. Made from the finest materials, these items are tailored precisely to body measurements. The process involves exceptional attention to detail. Skilled artisans spend hundreds of hours in design and creation. Couture is considered wearable art that embodies a designer’s vision. Often, haute couture pushes fashion’s boundaries.

History of Couture Fashion

The father of haute couture, Charles Frederick Worth, founded his house back in 1858. He initiated the idea of a collection of couture clothes and salon shows. Every bride deserves a wedding gown that fits her body perfectly. Alterations play a significant role in achieving that flawless look. From taking in or altering the hem, alterations help create a personalized fit.

The cost of wedding dress alteration services depends on several factors such as:

Complexity of the alteration process
Type of fabric and embellishments

Even a professional offering a flat rate may only cover certain items. It is important to have a full understanding of what is actually included in a flat rate package.

The bridal alterations appointment is the step after a fitting. Alterations are the actual adjustments made. Standard alterations can include seam modifications, hemming the length, and removing sleeves. It is important these are made by a professional so as not to change a gown’s lines. Shoulders and Sleeves

If your gown is strapless, then you can skip this portion. One less bridal alteration that you don’t have to worry or pay for!

Shoulders and sleeves are crucial and to a proper fit. They also play a part in creating a silhouette. (And this area is in EVERY picture so let’s make sure you look great!)

Shoulder adjustments. Sometimes, a gown’s shoulders are too tight or too loose. This results in an ill-fitting bodice.
Sleeve alterations. Sleeves may their length or width adjusted. Other times, brides may wish to have gowns added or removed. Many wedding gowns have accents at the shoulder and at the wrists.
Bra straps. Too long? Too short? Too narrow? Too wide? Bridal gowns often need their shoulder straps adjusted for look and/or support. Additionally, some straps need to be detached or convertible straps added.

Shoulders and sleeves are the pricing alterations here. Straps are a simple adjustment since they don’t have much effect on a gown’s lines.

Dress too big? Your dress may need to be taken in or only in certain areas.

Dress too small? Your experience seamstress may need to make adjustments. (Depending on the size difference, this results in complicated alterations.)

Customization needed? This is the time to discuss any neckline changes, added ornamentation, lace removal, etc.

If this is a sample or vintage gown, you may need to set aside time for professional dry cleaning. (Vintage fashion often requires wet cleaning. Sometimes, we suggest restoration before alterations. This is determined by the gown’s current condition.) Consult with your trusted professional to determine the best course of action.

Wedding dress fabric. Materials possess distinct properties such as drape, stretch, or stiffness.

Common Wedding Dress Alterations Timeline

Shopping for a wedding gown is exciting. And when you finally found THE DRESS, you’re most likely clipped in to give the total effect. It is extremely rare to find a dress that fits your body perfectly off the rack. (This is actually for a lot of clothing.) Garments are meant to be altered to fit us. It’s why the universe gave us talented seamstresses and tailors!

If possible, prepare ahead so you’re not rushed. Typically, you want to allow around a few weeks to a few months. Here is a suggested timeline*:

*This is for gowns that do not require a restoration or pre-wedding gown cleaning.

Consultation/First Fitting. Schedule around 3-6 months prior to your wedding day. Your seamstress listens and also provides suggestions based on their expertise. Exact measurements are taken to create a personalized plan.
Second Fitting Appointment. Around 3-4 months prior to your wedding day, you can have either your initial fitting or your second. At this point, alterations are being worked on.
Third Fitting. Six weeks before your wedding day, it’s time for another visit. You’ve got things to do but stop in for a quick visit.
Final Fitting. Many brides schedule their final fitting about two weeks prior. With the stress and excitement, your weight may have had some slight shifts. It’s the perfect time to check in for any extra adjustments.

So you found your dream dress! Explore some tips for your wedding dress fittings.

Bring what you plan to wear on your wedding day. This includes correct undergarments, wedding shoes, and veil. Have them with you for all bridal fittings.
Avoid purchasing a gown too large or too small. Drastically changing a gown’s size is time-consuming and costly. It also may work against gown’s structure.
Plan for your alterations ahead. Avoid rushing the process. And remember, tailors and seamstresses are busy during wedding season. Get those appointments for custom alterations scheduled.
