How to Get Invited to NYFW

June 7, 2025 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Updated June 7, 2025

Want to know how to get invited to NYFW (New York Fashion Week)?

Whether you’re an upcoming designer, blogger, influencer, or simply love fashion, our helpful guide provides some easy ways to attend one of fashion’s most iconic events.

When NYFW or other highly coveted fashion events come around, fashion enthusiasts do their best to score an invitation. If you are interested in a career fashion, you know an invitation is like a holy grail. But what can you do in the way of New York Fashion Week outreach or get the attention of fashion brands?

What is NYFW

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is a semiannual event. It’s where top designers, fashion houses, and emerging talent showcase their upcoming collections. Held in February and September, NYFW sets the tone for the fashion industry.

Organized in part by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), NYFW includes a mix of runway shows, pop-up events, parties, and panels.

For designers, it’s a platform to build buzz and establish trends. For attendees, it’s a mix of fashion, networking, and visibility. The mere mention of Fashion Week evokes an irresistible allure, shrouded in exclusivity and glamour. As you already know, it is the epitome of the fashion calendar. Navigating the path to securing a coveted invitation to your favorite designer(s) at Fashion Week isn’t easy, but don’t lose hope.

Make your fashion dream a reality.

NYFW – The Basics

Each year, the specific dates of New York Fashion Week can vary slightly, as they are determined by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

  • February presents Fall/Winter collections
  • September showcases Spring/Summer collections

These shows set the tone for trends and styles that will influence the industry in the coming seasons. If you know, you know. (And if you don’t, revisit that iconic Meryl Streep moment in The Devil Wears Prada.)

NYFW is a culmination of runway shows, presentations, and various glamorous events. The select audience is full of fashion editors, buyers, celebrities, and influencers. Each show attracts attention for its high-profile attendees and influence on global fashion trends.

Who Is Invited to Fashion Week

When Fashion Week rolls around, we are inundated with images of our favorite celebrities with the coveted seat assignment. The front-row seats are often reserved for editors, celebrities, buyers, stylists, and industry insiders. Industry guest lists are sent invitations from designers or their PR teams.

Not everyone who attends New York Fashion Week gets there with a golden ticket. Many attendees have to work for their seat. Not all hope is lost, but here are a few people that may need to put some effort in for their invitation:

  • Rising influencers
  • New-to-the-scene stylists
  • Fashion students
  • Tailoring and garment care (like Hallak Cleaners)

To gain an invitation, it is important to take the proper steps and build relationships. Stylists and influencers should develop a stronger online presence and be part of ‘the conversation’.

Journalists, bloggers, and photographers can apply for press passes through NYFW’s official site or directly with show producers.

How to Get Invited to Fashion Week

Depending on your career or career path, there are a few different ways to attempt access to an influential runway show. Review your options below.

Build Your Online Presence and Visibility

Gaining recognition in the fashion world starts with a strong online presence.

Leverage social platforms like Instagram and TikTok to create a curated and engaging feed. Showcase your personal style, fashion insights, and creative work—whether it’s design, styling, or commentary.

Compliment your social media with a professional portfolio or blog.

  • Share with your audience inspirations, offer trend analysis, and fashion tips. Go beyond outfit social media posts by giving your audience a deeper look into your creative process. Share what inspires your style—whether it’s art, travel, vintage fashion, or cultural influences. Offer commentary on current fashion trends and what they might mean for everyday wear or future collections. You can also provide practical tips, like how to style certain silhouettes or transition looks between seasons. This positions you as a knowledgeable voice, not just a content creator. Mix with social media channels and thoughtful blog posts.
  • Collaborate with local designers and meetings with brands to build real-world connections. Reach out to emerging designers, independent boutiques, or local fashion collectives to create content together. Consider a photoshoot, capsule feature, or co-hosted event. These collaborations not only add depth to your portfolio but also connect your name to other respected voices in the fashion scene. Tagging and cross-promotion also help expand your reach while reinforcing your credibility.
  • Participate in fashion-related social events, contribute to industry publications, and position yourself as a thought leader. Attend local runway shows, pop-ups, social events, or networking mixers. Look for various ways to stay connected with your regional fashion ecosystem. Submit articles or insights to blogs, online magazines, or industry newsletters. Focus on style commentary, designer spotlights, or sustainable fashion practices. Consistently producing thoughtful, well-researched content.
Use your platform to show you’re more than a fashion lover—you’re a professional with a point of view worth listening to.

Speak with fellow bloggers to see how they are navigating their race to New York Fashion Week. Fashion people help each other out.

Apply Through Official Channels

If you are a fashion blogger, influencer, journalist, or other part of the media have a more direct route to New York Fashion Week. This is through official accreditation. IMG offers an application process. If qualified, you can apply for press credentials through NYFW. They require documentation (e.g. media kit, audience demographics).

Some media has found success connecting directly with their PR contacts or event producers. Present yourself as someone who will bring visibility and value to the show(s) you’re requesting.

Tips:

  • Draft a professional, personalized pitch email
  • Update media kit and relevant links
  • Highlight your reach, relevance, and industry-related credibility
  • Send follow-up emails to confirm

Attend Public or Ticketed Shows

Not every Fashion Week event is exclusive or invite-only.

Often, you will see up-and-coming designers hosting ticketed of open-to-public shows. It is a chance for them to build their audience and generate a buzz. Research these types of shows on Eventbrite, Fashion Week Online, and other sources. Do you research early and request tickets asap.

Look for additional events such as pop-ups, installations, and showroom presentations. They are a great way to view new collections and network.

Tips:

  • Monitor FashionWeekOnline.com
  • Check for events on Eventbrite.com
  • Follow brand Instagram pages
  • Sign up for newsletters

Student & Volunteer Access

If you’re a fashion student or early in your career, volunteering or applying through educational programs. With special events like this, production companies and PR firms rely on volunteers. Help with guest check-in, backstage coordination, and logistical support. Gain behind-the-scenes experience AND a seat at the show.

Tips:

  • Ask your school’s fashion department or career services
  • Search online for NYFW volunteer or internship programs
  • Follow NYFW production companies on LinkedIn or Instagram

The Fashion Week Journey

Persistence and patience are key on your NYFW journey.  Understanding the competitive nature of the fashion industry is crucial. There are so many talented and interesting people that love designer fashion. Securing an invitation requires both skill and tenacity. Not getting an invite does not mean you don’t have what it takes. Sometimes, connections and the right moment can change everything. So don’t get discouraged. (You can also look into other types of fashion events such as fashion trades shows to build experience and your network.)

Staying committed to the process is a testament to your dedication to the world of fashion. It involves refining your craft, networking tirelessly, and adapting to trends.

What to Wear to NYFW

New York Fashion Week is the ultimate stage for personal style. From bold streetwear to refined couture, there’s no one-size-fits-all dress code. Just remember that presentation is everything. A perfectly styled look can lose its impact if it’s wrinkled, stained, or poorly fitted. That’s where expert garment care comes in.

Rely on professional dry cleaners like Hallak to press, steam, and prep their NYFW outfits ahead of time. Whether you’re debuting a vintage designer piece or a statement coat, crisp tailoring and clean lines make a lasting impression. It’s your look—let it shine, wrinkle-free and photo-ready.

New York Fashion Week Aspirations

Never give up. If your dream is to make it to New York Fashion Week, then keep working at it.

Even if you don’t make it to NYFW, the journey can be just as fun and exciting. Along the way, you will meet many talented people who can help you elevate your craft. And you can certainly consider that a success! See you in New York City and hold onto your passion for fashion.

How to Clean Outdoor Upholstery

June 6, 2025 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Updated 6/6/25

Learn how to clean outdoor upholstery with our helpful guide.

Don’t wait until the end of the summer to care for your outdoor patio cushions. Don’t let stains on cushions settle in.

Fabric cushions look great and are so comfortable. Designed to withstand regular use and weather, do not be shocked by a residual stain from suntan lotion, mildew spots, or accidental spills.

Preventative Care for Outdoor Cushions

Throughout the warmer months, your outdoor furniture (and outdoor umbrellas) is exposed regularly to sunlight, heavy rainfall, insects, food, drink spills, etc.

Depending on your cushion fabric and stain, you may choose to spot clean or clean the entire cushion. Some cushions come with a removable cover that may be washing machine friendly. Before tossing in, be sure to read the care instructions.

If your item has not been cleaned all season, your items may be in the need of an extensive cleaning. Deep cleanings are the best way to truly ensure that you won’t have surprises the upcoming spring season.

How to Clean Outdoor Furniture Cushions

Let’s dive into how to clean outdoor cushions.

  1. Start with reviewing the care label and cushion fabric.
  2. Gather your cleaning supplies including mild detergent, soft bristle brush, etc.
  3. Move cushions to a clean area ahead of the actual cleaning
  4. Remove any loose dirt by vacuuming each cushion cover. Don’t skip this step – and use your upholstery vacuum attachment.

Stain Removal

When it comes to stain removal or spot cleaning, we always advise people to be cautious. Follow your cushion’s care label instructions for the type of detergent, clean water temperature, etc. While some outdoor fabric may respond to pressure washer, others may require  a gentler touch.

General Cleaning Techniques

Again, we do advise you to follow your care label instructions or turn to a professional. (Hallak Cleaners does offer this service.)

  • Soapy Water Solution: Use a mild soap or detergent mixed with warm water.
  • Scrubbing the Outdoor Cushions: Gently scrub with a sponge or soft bristle brush (depending on fabric!). (Certain set-in stains may require a professional‘s touch.*)
  • Rinsing Thoroughly: Be sure to remove all dirt and soap residue with clean water.
  • Dealing with Mildew: When it comes to mildew, you may need to see a professional’s care or attempt to remove with a solution of solution of water and white vinegar.

*Please note that stains that have settled in are not always possible to lift 100%. It is always better to treat stains as soon as possible.

Drying Clean Patio Cushions

Once cleaned, revisit your cushion’s care label instructions on the proper drying method. Most likely, you will have to air dry. Confirm if they should be drying in the sunlight or in the shade. Reshaping and fluffing may also be needed. Prior to storage, make sure the outdoor cushions are completely dried.

Seasonal Outdoor Cushion Care

Before storing away, it is important to clean your patio furniture and outdoor cushions. Even if you have been providing them regular cleaning, it is important that you clean all the items prior to storage.

If you don’t clean your patio cushions before storing them away for the winter, you risk causing long-term damage. Dirt, debris, and moisture left behind can lead to the growth of mold and mildew.  As you may already know, these easily cause unpleasant odors, stains, discoloration, and fabric deterioration. Additionally, an uncleaned patio cushion may also attact pests.

When you take them out for the next season, you may find your outdoor cushions unusable. You’ve invested in them so avoid replacing them with the proper care.

Once your items are cleaned, the last step is properly storing away your items. Be sure to choose a space that is climate-controlled, low humidity, and out of direct sunlight.

Professional Care for Your Outdoor Cushions

Before storing, we encourage you to clean outdoor cushions and your umbrella. Hallak’s team uses the most innovative cleaning solutions.

Outdoor cushion fabrics vary and are different from your garments . Therefore, your tried and true cleaning methods may not help with outdoor patio furniture cushions. Or worse, you can do more damage than good.

Hallak offers both on-site cleaning and the pick-up for your outdoor furniture cushions. (We can also help with commercial properties’ outdoor cushions as well!) We service the New York Metro area. For larger projects, we will travel.

Scheduling a pick-up is easy. And if you have questions, feel free to give us a call or email.

Celebrate Hallak Cleaners Anniversary along with us!

This year will mark our 59th anniversary of being the New York Metro area’s leading couture dry cleaner.  Hallak Cleaners is a family-owned and operated cleaners that cares for all items in-house.

May is a special month for us here at Hallak Cleaners.  During our anniversary month, it is also a time that we remember Mr. Joseph Hallak, Sr. – and his vision. The family is proud of maintaining the level of couture dry cleaning that our clients have known since the very beginning.

Remember Hallak Cleaners 50th Anniversary

It feels like it was just yesterday when we were celebrating our 50th with many of you.  For those of you who remember, both locations hosted special milestone anniversary parties with great food, libations and music.  It was a wonderful time to meet with long-time friends and meet some new ones. And we cannot wait to celebrate our 60th with you next year.

The Hallak Legacy

Let’s remember AND celebrate when it all started.

Mr. Joseph Hallak, Sr., believe the New York area was in need of French laundry – a superior garment care unbeknownst to the area.

However, Hallak’s care goes beyond our cleaning processes. Mr. Hallak also wanted every client to know just how valued they were. Today, we continue delivering this same level of customer care and passion. It’s why we are fortunate to have so many loyal clients (decades!) – and are able to meet so many new clients as well.

.Mr. Hallak’s hard work, passion and vision have brought us all to yet another anniversary. And we couldn’t be any more thankful.  John-Claude and Joe Hallak, Jr., wish to take this time to once again thank you for your trust in our fabric care and customer service. If you have any questions or feedback regarding our services, please feel free to email or give us a call.

Spring Wedding Dresses: A Couture Cleaner’s Perspective

May 12, 2025 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Spring wedding dress (and wedding party fashion) – tips from a dry cleaner.

Spring wedding season is a celebration of renewal, romance, and style. Blossoming flowers and soft breezes create a picture-perfect backdrop. This is the season of flowing fabrics, vintage lace, floral appliqués, and dresses that move like poetry.

But while the magic of a gown starts at the boutique, it truly comes to life in the final touches. As a couture dry cleaner, we specialize in luxury garment care for every step of the wedding journey. From first fittings to final preservation, we offer trusted, personalized services for the entire wedding party.

Pre-Wedding Services: From First Fitting to Final Steam

Your gown deserves to fit flawlessly—and so does every piece worn by your bridal party. Our pre-wedding services ensure that each garment is cleaned, pressed, tailored, and ready for the big day.

Alterations & Tailoring Hallak’s in-house tailors are experienced in couture craftsmanship. We specialize in delicate alterations, intricate beading, lace placement, and shaping garments. This same expertise extends to bridesmaids’ dresses, mothers’ gowns, and suiting for the groom and groomsmen.

Vintage & Heirloom Gown Care Planning to wear a treasured family gown? Our vintage gown restoration service revives older fabrics and removes discoloration. Preserve the beauty of your heirloom while making it wedding-ready. Interested in an estimate? Email bridal@hallak.com.

Sample Gown Cleaning Purchased your dress from a trunk show or sample sale? Sample gowns often need a fresh start. We clean and refresh the fabric, removing any showroom residue so your gown is ready for alterations or storage.

Pressing & Steaming Services The final step before the aisle is one of the most important: finishing. Our pressing and steaming services ensure that every gown, veil, tuxedo, and dress is wrinkle-free and ready to wear. We’ll coordinate timing for delivery or pickup so your wedding wardrobe arrives pristine.

Pre-Wedding Service Tips

  • Schedule early fittings: Don’t wait until the last minute. If possible, book alterations and tailoring at least 6–8 weeks before your wedding.

  • Clean after alterations: If you purchased a sample gown, we suggest cleaning after alterations. During the fittings, your gown is going to be handled a lot.

  • Press just before the big day: Plan to have your gown and wedding party outfits professionally steamed or pressed prior to the big day.

Post -Wedding Services: Preserving the Moment

Once the celebration is over, your wedding garments deserve the same attention they received before the big day. Hallak Cleaners’ post-wedding services are designed to clean and preserve your memories.

Gown Cleaning Your wedding day is full of movement—dancing, walking, and celebrating can all leave invisible stains behind. Specialized cleaning targets everything from dirt at the hem to champagne spills, makeup, and sweat. Every gown is treated individually with techniques that protect the fabric’s integrity.

Gown Preservation We offer museum-quality preservation for wedding gowns, veils, and accessories. Using acid-free materials and archival packaging, we protect your dress from discoloration, moisture, and fabric breakdown. Whether you’re saving it for future generations or simply for the memory, your gown deserves a timeless resting place.

Accessory Care From embellished veils and custom gloves to belts, wraps, and detachable trains—we professionally clean and, when desired, preserve each item as part of your wedding ensemble.

Post-Wedding Service Tips

  • Act fast on stains: Bring your gown in for cleaning as soon as possible—stains like champagne or makeup can set over time and become harder to remove.

  • Preserve it properly: Store your gown in a climate-controlled space only after it’s been cleaned and preserved using acid-free materials. Avoid plastic covers or cardboard boxes.

Caring for the Entire Wedding Party

While the bride may take center stage, we offer expert garment care for everyone involved in your celebration. Our services extend to:

  • Groom & groomsmen: Tailoring, shirt laundry, pressing, and cleaning of suits, tuxedos, and accessories

  • Bridesmaids & mothers: Dress alterations, pressing, and delicate fabric handling

Our goal is to eliminate stress and ensure every garment is perfectly prepared for the big day.

Met Gala 2025 Theme and the Event’s History

April 4, 2025 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Interested in learning more about the Met Gala 2025 theme?

Often hailed as fashion’s most prestigious night, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event. It supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The philanthropic moment provides necessary funding for exhibitions, acquisitions, and other improvements.

The star-studded affair draws celebrities, designers, and pop cultural icons. Fashion enthusiasts look forward to seeing each attendee. Wondering what interpretations we will see of the event’s unique annual theme. As you may know, the theme dictates the official dress code.

2025s Theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”

Dress Code: “Tailored for You”

Co-Sponsor: Louis Vuitton

This year’s Met Gala Co-Chairs: Pharrell Williams (LV’s Men’s Creative Director), Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Anna Wintour.

Honorary Co-Chair: LeBron James will serve as an honorary chair.

Peek at some of the Host Committee members: André 3000, Simone Biles, Jonathan Owens, Grace Wales Bonner, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Rashid Johnson, Regina King, Spike Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Olivier Rousteing, USHER, Kara Walker, and more.

“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” pays homage to Black dandyism. The event and Met Costume exhibition are inspired by Monica Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Professor Monica L. Miller (Barnard College) served as the Guest Curator for the exhibit featuring over 200 fashion items. The dress code has a strong focus on men’s tailoring, high-style menswear, and concept of Dandyism. We are interested to see the attendee’s personal style intertwine with such a deep-rooted exhibition theme. It has been twenty years since an exhibit exclusively focus on menswear and with such rich history behind it. Visit the museum from May 10 through October 26, 2025. Be sure to visit and explore meaningful conversations meant to be had.

History of the Met Gala

As a couture dry cleaner, we are right there with the rest of you come Met Gala season. First, it is the theme announcement. Trying to guess or imagine what the designers will think of next. They surely outdo themselves each and every year.

While we have seen many luxury items walk through our door, there are those extra special items. The Met Gala inspires fashion that goes beyond fashion’s runway. They are pieces of art that may be made of outrageous textiles in gravity-defying shapes.

Initially, the Met Gala was more known simply as a fundraising event for the Costume Institute. The gala evolved into a highly-anticipated and watched fashion event. Forever flocked by celebrities and designers. The who’s who of guest lists. And reminding us the power of style with each annual fashion exhibition. On the first Monday in May, the Met hosts the annual gala.

Today’s Met Gala pushes boundaries and challenges designers to create in a way much different than what they are presenting in the own fashion houses. It’s always exciting to see each designer’s individual take on a Met Gala theme. And after the excitement has passed, we are here to clean and preserve those artworks for years to come.

The Importance of This Annual Event

The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Gala,  is one of the most high-profile events in the fashion industry. It is also one of the biggest nights of fashion each year. And every year, paparazzi and those at home wait to see what celebrities, fashion designers, and other famous people will be wearing. As soon as the high-profile guests start arriving, fashion magazines and bloggers begin their best dressed lists and who’s who of the evening.

Designers showcase their work on this special evening. Often, attendees are wearing works-of-art and custom-made garments. Many are designed specifically for this event. In addition to the art and excitement, all the exposure also puts a spotlight on these designers.

In addition, designers are also setting the tone for upcoming fashion trends. Breathtaking Met Gala dresses are used as inspiration for more scaled-down versions. If you’re a fan of the Met Gala, you’re aware of some of the stunning but impossible designs that have made their way up their steps. Most people would not have the luxury of people following us to carry our train on an evening out. (If we could, we would though. What a dramatic entrance!)

Rightfully so, the Met Gala has become a cultural phenomenon. Millions of people around the world tune in to see what A-lister attendees are wearing and how they interpret the theme of the event. This widespread interest in the Met Gala has made it an important event in popular culture. It truly an annual iconic fashion moment.

The Met Gala Theme

As a global event, the The Met Gala theme is actually known well-before any of the fashion graces our screen. It is chosen by the Costume Institute’s curator in collaboration with the museum’s staff and outside consultants (e.g. fashion designers, historians, and other experts).

Months before the event, designers and celebrities learn of the Met Gala theme. Then, fashion designers and attendees (mostly, celebrities) collaborate to create an outfit that reflects the theme in their own unique way. It truly is quite amazing what type of creations will be exhibited.

In 2023, the theme was “In Honor of Karl”. The Costume Institute’s Karl Lagerfeld exhibition showcases over 150 pieces of work. Known for his work at many luxury design houses, celebrities and designers paid tribute in their own way.

Like 2023, the themes are often tied to the Costume Institute’s exhibitions. These museum exhibits’ showcase extensive collections of fashion and costume history. Alternatively, a Met Gala themes can also be broader cultural or historical concepts. When deciding on the theme, the main goal is to provide a unifying concept that is also inspirational. After all, it is the memorable fashion that has as tuning in every year.

Past Met Gala Themes Included

  • World of Balenciaga (1973)
  • The Eighteenth Century Woman (1981)
  • Haute Couture (1995)
  • The House of Chanel (2005)
  • Punk: Chaous to Couture (2013)
  • Camp: Notes on Fashion (2019)

Iconic Dresses

They came for the fashion.  At Hallak, we are fortunate enough to see couture evening gowns regularly. But nothing quite compares to the outfits worn at the Met Gala. (Perhaps, a custom wedding gown that shows the same attention to detail and unique fabrics.)

Caring for these items also requires a unique process. Like any garment that comes through our door, the Hallak team examines from top to bottom. We are looking for signs of wear-and-tear, fabric condition, ornamentation, and the design itself. Depending on the item, a cleaning department expert will then determine the amount of spot cleaning, solvent(s) needed, and finishing required.

Fashion designers and their teams work tirelessly on these creations. So it’s important to take the necessary steps in providing the expert care needed to preserve them properly. Of course, we provide the same level of care for any garment that walks through our door.

2025s Classic Menswear Focus

With a focus on classic menswear staples, there is sure to be some well-fitted garments on this year’s red carpet. Curious fashion lovers such as ourselves can’t wait to see the creations that speak to the context of Dandyism. While it is fun to see celebrity outfits, this year is that much more special. It is a teachable moment for many.
