Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Hallak

October 1, 2024 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Hallak Cleaners

Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Hallak Cleaners.

Every October, Hallak joins many other community organizations and businesses in doing their part to share breast cancer awareness and further fund research.

If you are unfamiliar with Hallak’s pink pride, allow us to quickly explain. Every year, we donate a portion of our October cleaning proceeds from all pink garments in hopes of finding a cure and awareness.

At Hallak, we love pink –  and it doesn’t have to be ‘Hallak pink’!  Along with being a great cause, it looks great. There is a shade for everyone. And yes, you can certainly wear pink in the fall.

If you lean towards a paler shade, be sure to be conscious of what you are pairing your pastels with. Dye transfer is a real thing – and can be quite difficult to ‘fix’. Unfortunately, it is not able to be fully removed so bring it to a professional for a proper evaluation. Hallak Cleaners has been known to be a miracle worker so it never hurts to ask!

In addition to donating, we are also giving away breast cancer awareness items at both store locations: New York and New Jersey.

Continue to wear your pink all fall and winter long. There are plenty of autumn choices in a range of shades.  For your more casual items, consider our wash-and-fold service. And of course, our couture dry cleaning is always here for you. Let’s not forget our specialized leather, suede and fur department either.

What Is Couture Fashion: Behind Haute Couture

August 11, 2024 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Updated 8/11/2024

When you think of couture houses, it’s easy to list several in a manner of seconds. Chanel, Givenchy, Christian Dior…these high-end fashion houses’ couture garments show strict adherence to quality requirements by The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.So how do you find yourself showcasing your haute couture pieces at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week?

What is Couture Fashion

Let’s answer the question – “what is couture fashion?” Otherwise known as haute couture, this level of fashion represents the highest pinnacle. These custom-fitted garments are crafted from start to finish.

Unlike ready-to-wear- garments, couture pieces are created for individuals. Made from the finest materials, these items are tailored precisely to body measurements. The process involves exceptional attention to detail. Skilled artisans spend hundreds of hours in design and creation. Couture is considered wearable art that embodies a designer’s vision. Often, haute couture pushes fashion’s boundaries.

History of Couture Fashion

The father of haute couture, Charles Frederick Worth, founded his house back in 1858. He initiated the idea of a collection of couture clothes and salon shows.  The exclusive custom-fitted clothing were modeled by live models. Then, couture clients provided their measurements and custom selections. Although not a French Fashion Designer, he built his business in Paris and encompassed the luxuriousness of the French fashion culture.

Worth would also lay the foundation for Fashion Week; he organized his fashion collections to be shown twice a year. Seeing what the House of Worth accomplished, other designers joined in the Paris couture market. This is why Paris Couture Week is still such a coveted event to this day by fashion companies, fashion editors, and more. It is every fashion model’s dream to walk in the couture fashion capital’s show.

Couture and Ready-to-Wear Clothing

Garments created in haute couture fashion houses are known for their one-of-a-kind design, high-quality fabrics (and ornamentation), extreme attention to detail, and custom fit.

Fortunately, couture designers and other luxury houses offer ready-to-wear luxury clothing. Still luxurious and coveted, ready-to-wear refers to clothing that is considered more affordable fashion (for some). They are produced in standard sizes and made available to boutiques and department stores. Meant to be purchased by a wider audience, the clothing is produced in larger qualities. This does not mean that quality has been skimped. They are still made of premium materials and carry a high level of prestige.

Luxury Ready-to-Wear Clothing Industry

Although not full-on French couture, the same couture sewing techniques and fabrics can be found in high-end ready-to-wear collections.

  • Excellent Quality. Finest fabrics and custom creation. The fabrics used are often of superior quality and/or unique textiles. Therefore, the garment creation process is usually more time-consuming and labor-intensive.
  • Celebrity Designer. Both couture and RTW designers are well-known and fall in the celebrity category. No longer simply behind the scenes, they are openly appreciated for their exquisite creations thoughtfully dreamed, designed and executed. They often end up befriending fashion enthusiasts, celebrities and couture collectors.
  • Clothing Brands. Designer clothing brands are known for being exclusive and prestigious. In addition the garments, there is a general brand image that is associated with a couture business. It is exactly why logos are so welcome on many garments and custom clothing.
  • Meticulous Attention to Detail. When it comes to the couture industry, designers turn to more traditional craftsmanship techniques such as couture sewing, hand-stitching, embroidery, and other processes involving a high level of skill. With these techniques, each garment bring with it a sense of heritage and authenticity.
  • Exclusivity. Couture clothing and accessories are often produced in limited quantities or as one-of-a-kind. Similar to a Birkin, there often is a special VIP list for these items.

Why Haute Couture Fashion Houses are Important

There are many reasons why it’s important to have a set of standards for haute couture fashion. While we appreciate all levels of fashion, it is important to differentiate them to protect the artistic integrity of these houses.

  • Innovation. When you think of haute couture, it is okay to consider this style that you may not be able to walk down the street in. This type of clothing was not created with consideration to the commercial market. In fact, they purposely tend to choose fabric, lines, and ornamentation that cannot be mass produced. Thus, it allows designers to use unusual fabrics (or mediums) and innovative techniques.

  • Artisanship. Tailors and seamstresses already ‘wow’ us with their skills and talent that go beyond accurate measurements. And when it comes to unique haute couture designs, you can only imagine the skillset needed. Their impeccable craftsmanship ensures every detail is calculated and executed properly. Then, there is the extra step of the perfect fit (once constructed).

  • Trendsetting. All designers and fashion makers look to haute couture for inspiration. From these innovative styles, future designs are born; those that may be able to be outfitted to suit a more public market.

Haute Couture Today

With this level of exclusivity (and price tag), it is not surprising to learn that haute couture has and will always have a special buyer in mind.

  • Royalty. It is no surprises that haute couture designers love providing royal families access to their original designs. Often, princesses and queens are known for being stylish women. While not obtainable, the public looks to them to see what they are wearing next. Just think about how Markle’s wedding gown choices inspired brides across the world (and fashion designers).

  • High-Society. Celebrities have couture designers wanted to dress them. The feeling is mutual as this group is also clamoring for these exclusive garments. What better way to stand out or make a statement than with an innovative, haute couture piece?

  • Collectors. Avant-garde items are especially coveted by collectors. With a love for wearable art, they see the value and significance in these special garments. They are certainly an investment that holds great meaning to these individuals.

In today’s fashion industry, you will also find other style enthusiasts and influencers donning haute couture clothing. The fortunate ones, of course! It isn’t easy to make these connections. However when you do, we can only imagine how it must feel to attend the next fashion event wearing a custom piece. What better way to say you’ve made it in the fashion industry?

The Future of Couture Fashion

The fashion industry continues to look at sustainability and ways to address additional ethical concerns. This does not have to mean the end of couture fashion. It is simply an additional challenge and/or inspiration to look for new textiles that are ethically sourced.

What’s beautiful about haute couture is that it is that perfect mix of innovative designs and design innovation. The standards set are certainly historically rooted; they also have adapted with today’s industry regulations. Fashion house teams provide the space for these workers to create, perfect their skills and share them with others. When garment manufacturing has embraced mass production, there is still a place for custom-fitted clothing.

How Much Do Wedding Dress Alterations Cost?

July 28, 2024 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Wondering how much do wedding dress alterations cost?

Whether you are a bride-to-be or simply wedding day daydreaming, this is a question that we are asked about a lot. Unfortunately, it is not a black-and-white answer. Alterations are unique to the bride and her wedding gown.

Every bride deserves a wedding gown that fits her body perfectly. Alterations play a significant role in achieving that flawless look. From taking in or altering the hem, alterations help create a personalized fit.

The cost of wedding dress alteration services depends on several factors such as:

  • Complexity of the alteration process

  • Type of fabric and embellishments

  • Skirt seams, boning, and other design elements
  • Seamstress or tailor’s experience and expertise

Even a professional offering a flat rate may only cover certain items. It is important to have a full understanding of what is actually included in a flat rate package.

That’s not exactly the answer you’re looking for so let’s dig a little deeper. You deserve the best wedding dress experience and being informed is the best first step.

Fitting Appointments vs. Wedding Dress Alterations

Often used interchangeably, there is a difference between fitting appointments and alterations. Before any bride receives pricing for their alterations, we invite them in for a consultation aka fitting.

Fitting for Wedding Dress

Fitting appointments are the initial step. It allows you to see how your dress looks and feels. The seamstress or tailor evaluates the dress fit while on. At this time, you can discuss any necessary adjustments or restyling requests.

Wedding Gown Alteration Appointment

The bridal alterations appointment is the step after a fitting. Alterations are the actual adjustments made. Standard alterations can include seam modifications, hemming the length, and removing sleeves. It is important these are made by a professional so as not to change a gown’s lines. Your wedding dress should fit comfortably and look beautiful!

Types of Wedding Dress Alterations

Trying on wedding gowns should be fun and exciting.

Far too often, brides are too hard on themselves regarding their body shape. We always advise going in with the proper mindset that the gown should be adjusted to you not the other way around. Find a wedding gown style that accentuates your favorite curves. We’ll take care of the rest!

With the help of expert alterations, your wedding gown will flatter and feel great on! Professionals have the necessary expertise to handle delicate fabrics and intricate details.

Let’s take a look at some complex and typical alterations.

Wedding Gown Bodice

The bodice of a wedding gown is one of the most critical components of a bride’s overall look. This focal point requires careful alterations to ensure the right fit.

  • Bust adjustments. Depending on the level of support needed, the tailor / seamstress can tighten, add bra cups, remove padding, etc.

  • Waistline. Create a flattering silhouette with a few adjustments. Taking in or letting out helps accentuate or de-emphasize the waist. More complex corset alterations are more time-consuming and costlier.

Tip: Be sure to bring the correct undergarments you plan on wearing to all your wedding dress alterations appointment.

Gowns with heavy boning or intricate ornamentation may be a bit more costly. Any wedding dress tailoring can throw off these items. Re-shaping the back is also quite complex. The goal is to maintain the overall design integrity and still achieve the desired change.

Wedding Dress Skirt

A wedding gown’s skirt style can be quite dramatic. As another major focal point, you are going to want this to fit your shape perfectly.

  • Hemming. Depending on the gown, some hemming is simple and other are more intricate due to hemline embellishments. The more complex, the higher the bridal hem cost.

  • Taking in. Chosen a gown that hugs your body? The skirt will need to seamlessly be taken in for a clean look. More complex skirt teams may need to be taken in the entire seam.

  • Layering. Adding and removing layers is a complex skirt alteration. Even removing or adding one layer of lace dramatically affects how a skirt drapes and moves. This alteration requires careful attention to detail and seamless blending.

  • Bustle. All dresses with a train require lifting and securing. Of course, there are different bustle styles such as traditional, French, and Victorian. The complexity of the bustle alteration depends on the layers, intricate details, and fabric.

Tip: Be sure to bring your wedding shoes (or a pair in the same height) you plan on wearing to all your appointments.

Shoulders and Sleeves

If your gown is strapless, then you can skip this portion. One less bridal alteration that you don’t have to worry or pay for!

Shoulders and sleeves are crucial and to a proper fit. They also play a part in creating a silhouette. (And this area is in EVERY picture so let’s make sure you look great!)

  • Shoulder adjustments. Sometimes, a gown’s shoulders are too tight or too loose. This results in an ill-fitting bodice.

  • Sleeve alterations. Sleeves may their length or width adjusted. Other times, brides may wish to have gowns added or removed. Many wedding gowns have accents at the shoulder and at the wrists.

  • Bra straps. Too long? Too short? Too narrow? Too wide? Bridal gowns often need their shoulder straps adjusted for look and/or support. Additionally, some straps need to be detached or convertible straps added.

Shoulders and sleeves are the pricing alterations here. Straps are a simple adjustment since they don’t have much effect on a gown’s lines.

Additional Embellishments

From the intricate beadwork to the delicate lace appliques, the embellishments on bridal gowns can truly make it a work of art.

Beadwork adjustments and other intricate embellishments’ alterations are quite time consuming. This hand work calls for meticulous attention to detail to maintain the design. Anything time consuming may result in a higher cost than a more traditional alteration.

Costlier Types of Alterations

Every bride dreams of looking flawless on her big day.

Alterations allow brides to have a gown that truly fits and feels good. The cost of alterations may vary depending on specific factors.

Experience and quality

Experience and quality of the tailor play a significant role in pricing. With years of expertise, these artisans are able to handle complex and intricate alterations. The attention to detail, meticulous stitching, and careful handling of each gown – don’t skimp on quality.

Fabric Type

Different fabrics require different techniques and expertise. This is a common cost factor.

For instance, delicate fabrics such as silk, lace, and chiffon call for specialized tools and techniques. Hand-sewing or French seams help preserve a gown’s original design. Invested in high fabric quality, then take the steps to protect it. More durable fabrics such as polyester are relatively easier to alter. Standard sewing techniques can be used requiring less time and effort.

Requested Return Date

Timing is everything. While Hallak Cleaners does not charge extra for rushes, some professionals do.

Rushes can include a quick wedding, a gown arriving late from a manufacturer, or weight loss/gain. Some seamstresses or tailors have to adjust their current projects. To meet your needs, they may request an extra fee.

To avoid these fees, go to a professional that does not charge and do your best to plan ahead! Leave ample time for fittings.

Wedding Gown Alterations Costs

You’ve invested in your wedding gown so don’t skimp on your bridal gown alterations. Choose a top-notch alteration expert to ensure a flawless fit on your wedding day.

While we would love to provide an average cost, the fee for alterations is truly determined by so many factors. It is always best to have a proper consultation or fitting. If you are still shopping for your gown, it is best to make alterations a part of your wedding budget.

How Long Do Wedding Dress Alterations Take?

July 7, 2024 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Wondering how long wedding alterations take?

While there is no clear cut standard, there are guidelines that you will find helpful.

Each bride is unique and the alterations are determined by her. Simple alterations, such as hemming or taking in the sides, need only a few weeks. Then, there are more complex modifications requiring more time.

By planning ahead, you are going to thank yourself later. Of course, we can always help with ‘rush’ custom alterations. But who wants that stress or to rush the alteration process?

Take a look at our comprehensive guide on wedding gown alterations and a standard timeline.

Bridal Gown Alterations Initial Consultation

When a bride reaches out, we always strongly suggest a complimentary consultation for alterations. Your seamstress or tailor must see you with your gown on. It allows them to evaluate the gown’s fit and also understand your needs (or wishes).

Dress too big? Your dress may need to be taken in or only in certain areas.

Dress too small? Your experience seamstress may need to make adjustments. (Depending on the size difference, this results in complicated alterations.)

Customization needed? This is the time to discuss any neckline changes, added ornamentation, lace removal, etc.

If this is a sample or vintage gown, you may need to set aside time for professional dry cleaning. (Vintage fashion often requires wet cleaning. Sometimes, we suggest restoration before alterations. This is determined by the gown’s current condition.) Consult with your trusted professional to determine the best course of action.

What are some of the factors playing a role in alterations?

  • Wedding dress fabric. Materials possess distinct properties such as drape, stretch, or stiffness.
  • Gown’s structure. Boning, seams, and closures also influence which alterations are needed (or can be done).
  • Your body type. Each of us are made beautifully unique and our features should be accentuated.
  • Current condition. Gowns that are not brand new need an extra step – cleaning (and finishing).
  • Bustle options. Complicated bustle arrangements or moving bustle placement.

The initial consultation is a great time to have an open conversation. Explain to your seamstress/tailor any wishes, areas of concern, and more. (If you have a weight loss plan or are pregnant, it is important to mention.) The bridal dress alterations consultation goal is to make sure that you feel your very best and the fit is impeccable.

Schedule a consultation today.

Common Wedding Dress Alterations Timeline

Shopping for a wedding gown is exciting. And when you finally found THE DRESS, you’re most likely clipped in to give the total effect. It is extremely rare to find a dress that fits your body perfectly off the rack. (This is actually for a lot of clothing.) Garments are meant to be altered to fit us. It’s why the universe gave us talented seamstresses and tailors!

If possible, prepare ahead so you’re not rushed. Typically, you want to allow around a few weeks to a few months. Here is a suggested timeline*:

*This is for gowns that do not require a restoration or pre-wedding gown cleaning.

  • Consultation/First Fitting. Schedule around 3-6 months prior to your wedding day. Your seamstress listens and also provides suggestions based on their expertise. Exact measurements are taken to create a personalized plan.
  • Second Fitting Appointment. Around 3-4 months prior to your wedding day, you can have either your initial fitting or your second. At this point, alterations are being worked on.
  • Third Fitting. Six weeks before your wedding day, it’s time for another visit. You’ve got things to do but stop in for a quick visit.
  • Final Fitting. Many brides schedule their final fitting about two weeks prior. With the stress and excitement, your weight may have had some slight shifts. It’s the perfect time to check in for any extra adjustments.

Again, we provided a general timeline. Some brides may have additional fittings in-between or one more at the time of pick-up. Our team will work with you to create the perfect schedule.

Helpful Bridal Gown Alterations Tips

So you found your dream dress! Explore some tips for your wedding dress fittings.

  1. Bring what you plan to wear on your wedding day. This includes correct undergarments, wedding shoes, and veil. Have them with you for all  bridal fittings.
  2. Avoid purchasing a gown too large or too small. Drastically changing a gown’s size is time-consuming and costly. It also may work against gown’s structure.
  3. Plan for your alterations ahead. Avoid rushing the process. And remember, tailors and seamstresses are busy during wedding season. Get those appointments for custom alterations scheduled.
  4. Research alterations services. Hallak Cleaners has a talented team that has earned multiple 5-stars over their 50+ years in business. Bridal alterations are one of our specialties!
  5. Ask a friend or family member to join you. If possible, the person that is helping you into your gown should see how the gown goes on. (Especially true for corseted backs!)
  6. Show images for any bespoke details you’d like added. If possible, bring lace applique or other decor you’d like to add (or remove). (If your wedding tailor has to source ornamentation, this can take a couple of weeks.)
  7. Discuss any custom sleeves or detachable sleeves options. If you need them custom made, decide if you or seamstress is sourcing the custom fabrics.

Common Wedding Dress Questions

What factors affect the alterations process?

Several factors play a role in determining how long wedding dress alterations will take. The complexity of the alterations needed is the primary factor. If your dress requires adjustments to the silhouette, such as increased or decreased waistline, bust, or hip size, it may take longer than simpler alterations like hemming or adjusting sleeves. Additionally, the fabric of your dress and the intricacy of its details, such as beading or lace, can impact the timeline. It is essential to consult with an experienced seamstress or tailor who can assess these factors accurately.

Is it possible to expedite wedding dress alterations?

Yes, Hallak Cleaners always does its best to accommodate special needs. When it comes to alterations, this can be a little tricky. It is best to schedule a consultation immediately so we can determine services needed. Allow yourself (and the seamstress) plenty of time.

How many fittings should I expect for my wedding dress alterations?

A good rule of thumb is around 3-4 fittings. Of course, each bride is unique. How do we determine the number of fittings? We consider the needed alterations, gown complexity, time allowance, bride’s body shape, etc. ( Body weight loss or gain triggers additional fittings.)

Can my bridesmaids’ dresses have their dresses altered too?

Absolutely! Your whole wedding party is welcome at Hallak. We are here for grooms, bridesmaids, groomsmen, mother-of-the-brides, etc. Everyone. Coordinate your fittings and make a day of it.

How much do wedding alterations cost?

The cost of alterations varies. Your Hallak bridal alterations specialist reviews with you the various cost for each alteration.

What is your alterations policy?Currently, we do not have any alterations policy that charges you for additional fittings. In our decades of garment care, we have rarely had a bride requesting too many alterations per month, etc. Hallak’s alterations artisans are your trusted guide throughout the alterations process.

When Was Dry Cleaning Invented

June 15, 2024 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Updated June 15, 2024

When was dry cleaning invented?

Throughout the decades, the evolution of dry cleaning has certainly been an interesting one.

Cleaning garments is an ancient task. As hygiene evolved so did our need for clothing care. Then, you add the evolution of fabrics that require various processes.

Ancient Romans washed textiles with early solvents such as lye, ammonia, and clay. Fortunately, there are many clothing care options including dry cleaning. Let’s take a look at its history. (Yes, it’s quite interesting!)

What is Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning is a specialized garment care method utilizing chemical solvents. No water is involved. Renowned for its effectiveness in removing dirt, stains, and odors, it gained popularity.

Then, there was its temporary downfall due to environmental concerns. But we will dig into this a little later. Until then, have no fear! Hallak Cleaners and other dry cleaners adhere to strict guidelines.

Significant dry cleaning advancements allow for safer and more eco-friendly alternatives. Discover the history of dry cleaning today. From earlier flammable petroleum solvents to today’s more common solvents proven to be environmentally-friendly.

The Evolution of Dry Cleaning

Earlier, we mentioned Ancient Rome and its dry-cleaning connection. They understood the benefits of solvents – and their stain-removal properties.

Up until mid-19th century, dry cleaning looked very different. Earlier methods utilized petroleum-based solvents. Although highly effective as stain removes, they pose risks to the environment. (They also are quite harsh on fabrics as well.)

Dry cleaning slowly evolved bringing new solvents. One of the earlier (and less harmful) solvents is naphtha. The dry cleaning industry didn’t stop there. They continued and continue to adapt.

Neon green Dry Cleaning sign

Early History

Unfortunately, the early dry cleaning history is tainted by its hazardous chemical usage. Let’s take a look at the early dry cleaning process.

Originally, the process was discovered by accident. In the early 1800s, Jean Baptiste Jolly, a French textile dye works owner, accidentally spilled kerosene on a tablecloth. He noticed that the cloth became cleaner and the spot was gone! Intrigued, Jolly began experimenting with different solvents. (He is often considered the father of dry cleaning. He opened the first of what would be dry cleaning shops.)

Gasoline, kerosene, and other flammable petroleum-based solvents were the main go to. Were they effective stain removers? Yes. Were they highly volatile and dangerous? Yes, as well. Clothing care continued to evolve. This led to less flammable solvents such as carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene.

In the 1930s, dry cleaning became more widespread. Perchloroethylene (perc) was a driving force for its growing popularity. Although effective, early processing brought both environmental and health concerns. Perc is still popular today, but there have been advancements to reduce exposure. In addition, there are many strict environmental guidelines in place to protect your community (and dry clean workers).

The dry cleaning industry rallied to find innovative solutions. Modern-day dry cleaning establishments have embraced greener solvents, such as liquid silicone, which offer exceptional cleaning power while being non-toxic and biodegradable. These eco-friendly solvents ensure that the fabrics’ integrity remains intact while providing an impeccable level of cleanliness.

Not only do advancements in dry cleaning technology protect the environment, but they also enhance the longevity and appearance of garments. Traditional cleaning methods, such as washing in water, can be abrasive to delicate materials and often result in discoloration, shrinkage, or even irreversible damage to intricate embroidery and beadwork.

Thomas Jennings’ Patent

Before Jolly’s discovery in France, Thomas L. Jennings filed for a “dry scouring” patent through the U.S. Patent Office. As a clothier and tailor, Jennings’ clients relied on him for their clothing care.

Without proper stain removal, his clients stopped wearing and trashing his designs. Instead of taking advantage of the situation, he wanted to find a solution that saved clothing from being tossed. Thomas Jennings experimented with various solutions and solvents.

After testing on a few fabrics, he found his solution! With this, he requested a patent. Certainly an accomplishment, but this dry scouring patent was so much more. Thomas L. Jennings is the first African-American man to receive a patent. In addition to paving the way, Jennings took his hard-earned money and put it towards various abolitionist activities. A true community hero!

Dry Cleaning Solvents’ Evolution

Fashion is ever-changing. The need for expert garment care is not. Dry cleaners play a vital role in your wardrobe.  When risks were discovered, the industry took them seriously and researched alternative solvents.

Hallak Cleaners is one of around a dozen certified couture dry cleaners in the world. Yes, the world. Specialized services such as designer fashion, casual wear, bed linens, table linens, suede, leather, and more. Delicate fashions like wedding gowns are also one of the most common items dry cleaned. Depending on the fabric and ornamentation, your trusted cleaners will determine the best dry cleaning process.

Perchloroethylene solvent (PCE or Perc)

Once considered a standard solvent, perc is a highly-effective stain remover and also gentle on fabric. The industry aimed to mitigate risks involved with perc usage. Here are a few key trouble areas that were addressed:

Closed-Loop Systems: Today’s dry cleaning machines are designed with a closed-loop system. This captures and recycles perc reducing emissions. Hallak is always looking for the latest in dry cleaning machines and safer solvents.

Improved Filtration:  During the extraction process, advanced filtration systems remove impurities from the perc. By allowing the solvent for reuse, filtration reduces the need for fresh solvent. Less traces of solvent left equals less waste.

Regulatory Compliance: Stricter regulations and industry standards are in place and evolving. Dry cleaners must adopt all best practices to protect both employees and the community. Learn about Hallak’s green efforts here – including our EPA  Certificate of Environmental Stewardship.

Hydrocarbon  Solvents

The Future of the Dry Cleaning Industry

There was a time when “dry cleaning” was considered a dirty industry. At times, it was a necessary evil for your wardrobe. Clean clothes sometimes require a different level of care outside of your domestic washing machine. Delicate clothing are often labeled “dry clean only” and should be followed.

As a family-owned and operated couture cleaner, we can assure you we are not evil. We care a lot about our employees, clients, and the environment. Hallak proudly leads the charge in adopting  modern machines and innovative practices. You invest in your wardrobe and we are invested in you. It is the reason we implement eco-friendly solvents, utilize cutting-edge technology, and regularly provide training.

By now, many clients are already aware that we were the first Manhattan-licensed GreenEarth cleaner. (Hallak has also been awarded several environmental certificates.) Today’s solvents are ideal for many reasons including their environmental-friendly ingredients and their effectiveness in cleaning. Sounds like a win-win for everyone.

We hope you have enjoyed the history of when dry cleaning was invented.

Best Way to Store Clothes: Expert Tips

May 26, 2024 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

(Updated 3/30/2025)

Looking for the best way to store clothes? Then, you landed in the right place. And who better to ask than an internationally accredited couture dry cleaner – Hallak Cleaners

Whether you are looking for at-home tips or professional storage, we got you covered. Although we provide long-term storage (cold and box seasonal items), Hallak understands that some people prefer at-home storage for their clothing items.

Below, we offer seasonal storage steps and every day organization for clothing items. Make seasonal rotation simple with these steps with or without offsite storage.

Before You Store Clothing Items

By taking a few extra steps prior putting clothes in storage, you’ll be sure to maximize your efforts. Wouldn’t it be great to have organized seasonal clothing storage and free up some valuable closet space?

Three piles of clothing for decluttering. Donate, keep, and toss.

Step 1 – Declutter Your Wardrobe

Let’s take the first steps in your decluttering journey. Take stock of your items. What do you need? What do you want?

For items that you want to sell, consider their condition, style, and market demand. In-style and fashion (in good condition) are perfect for reselling. (Fortunately, there are many online and in-person opportunities.) Research the market value to help negotiate pricing.

Donating clothes is a great way to give back to the community. Look for gently used items that are still in good condition and can benefit others. Clothes that no longer fit or items you haven’t worn in a year are good candidates for donation. Local charities, shelters, or thrift stores often accept clothing donations.

When deciding what to keep, be honest with yourself. Are you wearing this piece? Will you wear this? Hey, we’re not here to judge just here to help! (Our dresser drawers are full too!) Don’t waste space by adding unnecessary clothes in storage.

Step 2 – Clean Prior to Seasonal Clothing Storage

Yes, we are a dry cleaners so we must talk about cleaning. It is essential prior to any off-season clothes storage. By cleaning, you prevent dirt, dust, and stains from causing deterioration. If left uncleaned, stains can settle in. Or worse. Dirty clothes can attract bugs and other pests.

If any of the clothes for storage are in need of repairs, take care of them now. Otherwise, they will be sitting in the repair / alterations pile next season.

Step 3 – Seasonal Clothing Storage Space

Decide where you will be storing clothing (and accessories). Consider the quantity and types of seasonal clothes you own and the storage areas you have access to.

For many Manhattanites, additional storage solutions are necessary due to limited closet space. Ideally, your seasonal clothing is in a climate-controlled storage unit. Stored clothing should also not be in direct sunset to avoid fading and other issues. (Read: NO attics or basements. Way too much moisture and temperature fluctuations.) If possible, a separate closet is perfect. Easy access so you can rotate clothes by season. You can use a combination of acid-free storage boxes and the vertical space for items hanging.

Tips:

  • For clothing items, avoid plastic storage bins and vacuum-sealed bags. When it comes to long-term storage, acid-free and natural fiber options.
  • Absolutely no unfinished basements or damp basements. We would avoid even as a temporary location. (Out of sight, out of mind.)

Step 4 – Time to Organize Seasonal Items

You’re almost there! Organize your clothing items in a logical and systematic way. Some people prefer to categorize clothes by garment type. Others store by wearability. Fortunately, there is a variety of clothing organization containers to choose from. (Questions? Try one of the many organization specialists in the area.)

Example – The New York metro area’s fall weather fluctuates. When placing clothing items into a storage solution, leave some lightweight or your favorite sweaters easily accessible. You will likely need them before your heavier winter clothes are needed.

Seasonal Storage Tips

Properly storing your fashion items is crucial in maintaining their quality and life. The right storage solution positively impacts your items’ condition. Let’s jump right into some tips.

  • Clean your items. Yes, it’s worth repeating. ‘Invisible food stains’ can attract pests that than lead to moth damage. (Agreed. Moth holes are so frustrating! Of course, weavers love them!)
  • Invests in quality storage solutions. No plastic containers! Fortunately, there are plenty of options outside of these airtight containers. Consider a cedar chest (or closet), breathable garment bags, fabric storage containers, and more. (Cedar blocks, cedar hangers, and cedar balls are also great purchases!) Your fabric needs to breathe but still remain protected. Planning on hanging some clothing? Purchase padded hangers to prevent creases and maintain clothing shape.
  • Footwear should be stored in their original boxes or some type of professional shoe box. The box should provide proper ventilation. It should also protect against dust and light.
  • Store accessories such as handbags separately. Original dust bags are ideal! Be sure to stuff them with acid-free tissue paper to help maintain their shape. (If you no longer have the dust fabric bag, try a white, cotton pillowcase instead.)
  • Check your storage space for signs of moisture, extreme temperatures, excessive sunlight and pests.

To Fold or Not to Fold

When it comes to storage, maximizing space and keeping things organized is key. Folding items is a great way to achieve both of these goals. There are several items that can be easily folded for storage, and here are a few examples.

Foldable: Shirts, pants, shorts, workout clothes, and casual summer dresses.

Folding Tips

Folding can feel like an art form you just quite haven’t mastered.

  • Start with a flat surface: Find a clean, spacious area to work on, such as a table or bed.
  • Purchase a folding aid: Ever see Sheldon fold on Big Bang Theory? While funny, his folding board is quite ideal! This type of tool acts as a helpful tool in creating precise folds. It also aids in uniformity so you have even stacks.
  • Pay attention to collars and sleeves: Align these areas and smooth out any wrinkles or creases.
  • Allow yourself time. Don’t rush through the folding process. This can result in uneven or sloppy folds. Patience is key in creating well-folded garments.

Long-term Storage Solutions for Hanging Garments

Unsure of which items should be left for hanging? Coats, suits, delicate dresses and heavily ornamented items are perfect candidates. Hanging helps maintain their shape, reduces wrinkles, and allows for easier accessibility. (Heavily ornamented items can also become snagged on other fashion so be sure to store those separately.)

Bulky coats and jackets. Use sturdy, padded hangers.

Suits and blazers. Choose breathable suit bags or garment bags.

Formal or embellished dresses. Protect their structure and details with breathable garment bags. Consider purchasing extra-long garment bags for your evening gowns. Padded or velvet hangers are ideal for delicate items.

Moisture Protection

Let’s talk about protection against moisture. Moisture absorbers such as cedar sachets are a wonderful way to protect your seasonal storage (and current wardrobe).

Excessive moisture can lead to mold, mildew and unpleasant orders. Without moisture absorbers, excessive moisture can lead to damage to the fabric over time. Utilizing moisture absorbers help maintain a dry environment without clothing storage spaces. They are designed to specifically draw in and trap moisture.

Current Wardrobe Organization Tips

So you have your seasonal clothing storage handled? Then, let’s take a quick look at some every day clothes storage ideas:

When possible, organize clothes by season. Using one spot for storage? Organization is key when dealing with lots of clothes. For items not in current seasonal rotation, use fabric containers, shoe rack, a shelf basket, etc.

Purchase attractive storage options including fabric containers. (No plastic containers!) Consider choosing storage bins in varying sizes. For an open wardrobe, you will love all the stylish fabric boxes to choose from.

Invest in a cedar wardrobe for storage or a cedar storage bench. They aren’t just another beautiful piece of furniture. They look great but also serve a purpose!

Additional current wardrobe storage solutions:

  • Fabric bags for delicate fabrics and handbags
  • Cedar sachets, cedar hangers, and blocks
  • Add moth repellent solutions and protect winter clothes

Long-Term Clothing Storage: At-home vs Professional

At-home storage offers convenience and accessibility. It allows individuals to have their clothing readily available whenever they need it. Additionally, it can be more cost-effective, as there are no fees. Your home clothing storage does come with limitations. Depending on your chosen space, fashion may not be safe from pests, humidity or the sun.

Professional storage solutions are designed with climate, moisture and pest’s protection in mind. They also offer additional security measures such as surveillance cameras and alarm systems.

Although your clothing will not be in your home, Hallak offers a quick turnaround. If you need to pull your items out of storage, give us a call. Learn more about our box and cold storage options today.
