How Often Should You Dry Clean a Coat?

November 25, 2023 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Updated March 19, 2026

Wondering how often should you dry clean a coat? Knowing how often to dry clean a coat is key to keeping it looking its best and lasting for years. The right cleaning schedule depends on how often you wear your coat, the conditions it is exposed to, and the fabric.

As a general rule, most coats should be cleaned at least once per season. Coats that are worn often or exposed to city conditions may need more frequent care.

As a couture professional dry cleaner serving the New York and New Jersey area since 1966, Hallak Cleaners recommends regular cleaning to protect both appearance and longevity.

When Should You Dry Clean Your Coat?

A simple guide to follow:

• At least once per season
• After exposure to rain, snow, or salt
• When you notice stains or odors
• Before storing your coat (a must!)

Many garments are labeled dry clean only, and for good reason. Professional cleaning uses the right techniques and liquid solvents to safely remove dirt and oils without damaging delicate fabrics.

Waiting too long between cleanings can cause stains to set and fibers to weaken over time. Our team suggests that you inspect your garments after a day out.

Factors That Affect Cleaning Frequency

Not all coats need the same level of care. Ask yourself:

• Do you commute on public transportation?
• Do you wear your coat daily?
• Is your coat light-colored or delicate?

If you answered yes, your coat likely needs more frequent cleaning.

It is also important to review the care label inside your garment. The label provides guidance, but luxury garments often require a higher level of attention than standard instructions suggest.

If you are unsure, inspect your coat regularly. Focus on high-contact areas like the collar, cuffs, and pockets. Also check for loose buttons, worn linings, or small repairs.

Why Pre-Storage Cleaning Matters

Before storing your coat, always have it professionally cleaned.

Even if it looks clean, there may be invisible stains from oils, moisture, or environmental exposure. These can attract moths or cause fabric damage during storage.

Professional stain removal and proper fabric care ensure your garment is ready for long-term storage. Storage without cleaning can lead to moth damage and permanent discolored areas.

Additional seasonal wardrobe management:
• Use breathable garment bags
• Avoid plastic storage bags
• Store in cedar or temperature-controlled environments
• Use cold storage for leather, suede, and fur

If storing coats hanging up, no wire hangers! A great movie quote and truth. (Velvet hangers are a great alternative.)

Winter Weather and Fabric Damage

In the New York City metro area, coats are exposed to snow, salt, rain, and pollution. These elements can break down fibers and leave lasting damage.

Salt stains, in particular, can weaken fabric and affect color if not removed properly. Regular visits to a professional dry cleaner help prevent long-term wear.

Trench Coats and Water-Repellent Finishes

Trench coats and rain jackets are timeless (and needed!), but they require specialized care.

Many trench coats feature a water-repellent finish, which can be damaged if cleaned improperly. Professional cleaning helps maintain this finish and may include reapplication treatments.

Luxury brands such as Burberry and other high-end designers require careful handling to preserve both structure and performance.

Using the wrong cleaning method can remove protective coatings or distort the fabric. Trusting an expert ensures your trench coat maintains its function and appearance.

Down Jackets and Luxury Puffers

Down jackets require special attention to maintain their insulation and shape.

Luxury brands such as Moncler, Herno, and other premium puffers use high-quality materials that can be damaged by improper cleaning.

Professional cleaning ensures:
• Proper handling of down filling
• Even drying to prevent clumping
• Preservation of shape and warmth

Attempting to clean these garments at home can lead to uneven filling or fabric damage. A professional approach helps extend the life of your investment.

Leather Jackets, Suede, and Fur

Outerwear made from leather, suede, or fur requires expert care.

Leather jackets often need:
• Spot cleaning
• Conditioning
• Color matching

Suede requires delicate handling to avoid texture damage. Fur garments must be cleaned with specialized processes to prevent drying and breakage.

These materials should never be treated with standard cleaning methods. Always trust a specialist in leather and fur care.

Trust a Professional Dry Cleaner

Not all dry cleaners provide the same level of care. Hallak Cleaners provides expert care for your luxury designer outerwear.

Hallak Cleaners is proud to serve as a trusted partner and repair center for several luxury outerwear brands. This level of trust reflects our expertise in handling high-end garments and complex fabric needs.

Every coat is:
• Carefully inspected before cleaning
• Treated with the appropriate cleaning method
• Finished with attention to detail
• Inspected again before return

Our professional dry cleaning process ensures proper fabric care, structure preservation, and long-term performance.

The Value of Proper Coat Care

Regular professional cleaning does more than improve appearance. It helps:

• Extend the life of your coat
• Maintain fabric integrity
• Preserve color and texture
• Prevent long-term damage

Proper care keeps your wardrobe looking polished and ready for every season.

Schedule Pick-up
How often should you dry clean a winter coat?

Hallak Cleaners suggests that dry cleaning your coat once per season (at the very least). If worn regularly, your jacket should be inspected regularly. If it shows any signs of wear and tear, have it professionally cleaned. Do not wait until the end of the season.

Can you dry clean a coat too often?

Yes. Excessive cleaning can wear down fibers, so balance is important. Inspection and reviewing the garment care label for tips. When in doubt, speak to a Hallak professional by calling, emailing, or stopping by either store location – Manhattan and Bergen County.

Should you always follow the care label?

Yes, but luxury garments often require expert evaluation beyond standard instructions. (Some manufacturers place care labels on an item prior to additions that may not require the same care process.) And if the care tag reads “Dry Clean Only”, it is best to trust that -especially if it’s a luxury item. A dry cleaning solvent is different than a regular solvent. Leave the dry cleaning questions to the professionals.

What is Holiday Casual Attire

November 19, 2023 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

Wondering what to wear to a casual holiday party?

The holiday season is here so your social calendar has most likely started to fill up. While this time of year is so fun, it also can be quite stressful. And it leaves many wondering what is the right holiday attire for each different type of party.

When it comes to any party, it is important to dress appropriately. A proper party invitation should give you an inkling as to what you should wear.

And if you’re throwing an event, please keep this in mind! Don’t assume people will just know what to wear. Your guests will thank you for it. The holiday season is very special so you definitely will want to look and feel your best. You can still make a positive statement at a more casual holiday party.

Defining the Casual Dress Code

So you received a casual holiday party. Now what?

When it comes to a casual event, it is important to strike the right balance between laidback and holiday festive. If you have received the invitation, look for any special dress code indications. Most likely, you’ll have a good understanding of the event based on the time, venue space, and theme.

Friend’s house? Daytime event? Ugly sweater party? You know it’s going to be casual and you’re going to be comfortable. This does not mean that you aren’t going to look amazing.

Men’s Casual Holiday Party Outfits

Consider a smart casual approach, opting for a well-fitted button-down shirt paired with tailored pants or dark denim jeans. This combination exudes a relaxed yet polished vibe. They also offer the versatility for various types of gatherings. To infuse a festive touch, choose shirts in seasonal colors or festive patterns. Experiment with layering—a crew-neck sweater over a collared shirt can add both warmth and style. Completing the look with stylish yet comfortable footwear, such as loafers or desert boots, will ensure you’re ready for a night of celebration.

Other great choices:

  • Casual suit with no tie or layered with sweater
  • Blue jeans or black jeans

Women’s Casual Holiday Outfit Ideas

When it comes to female attire, there is a myriad of stylish options to choose from. A classic choice is pairing a cozy, festive sweater with tailored jeans or chic leggings; this creates a comfortable yet trendy ensemble. If you prefer a dress, consider a versatile wrap dress in a seasonal shade or patter. What’s great about a pretty dress is that they offer a feminine and easy-to-wear option that transitions seamlessly from day to night. To play with your look, accessorize in a way that either accents or elevates your look.

If you are attending a casual holiday event and plan on going out later, a dress or simple outfit can work for both types of festive parties. Quick example – Your chosen outfit black pants, nice top, and jacket. For a casual look, pair with cute pair of boots, purse, and daily jewelry. For a more formal look, change up sparkle pumps, clutch, and statement necklace. Keep or leave jacket at home.

Other garment choices:

  • Basic black dress or little black dress
  • Velvet pants paired with a bodysuit and blazer
  • Comfortable midi skirt with velvet blouse

Additional Casual Holiday Dressing

Ugly Christmas sweater party? This is the easiest holiday party outfit to choose! Coordinate with friends or straight up class and make it ugly-cute. If you don’t want to fully commit, wear an ugly vest or festive cardigan over a cocktail dress.

Consider coordinating outfits as they can create a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic. Layering is key for both warmth and style, allowing each of you to showcase their unique fashion sense while still looking like part of a group.

When selecting your attire for a casual holiday party, take into account the weather and seasonal elements. Opt for fabrics that provide warmth without sacrificing style, such as velvet or wool blends. Embrace seasonal colors like deep reds, greens, and metallics to add a festive touch to your ensemble. Don’t forget weather-appropriate outerwear for arrival and departure—it can be both functional and fashionable.

Casual Holiday Party Fashion – The Dos and Don’ts

Avoid fashion mishaps with some dos and don’ts.

The Dos

  1. Follow the Dress Code: If one isn’t provided, then feel free to ask the host. By starting with the understanding of the dress code specified in the invitation, you’ll feel more comfortable at your event. (Even dressing more formal at a casual event can leave you feeling a little out of place.) Whether it’s a “casual chic” or “festive attire,” adhering to the provided guidelines ensures that your outfit is appropriate for the occasion.
  2. Consider the Venue and Theme: Use the location, theme, and time into consideration when determining your outfit choice. A casual gathering at a friend’s house may have a different vibe than a more formal event at a rented venue. Tailor your clothing choices to match the ambiance.
  3. Balance Comfort and Style: It’s okay aim for both comfort and style. This means, choosing fabrics that are comfortable for an extended period of wear, especially if the party involves dancing or other activities. However, ensure that your outfit reflects a festive and put-together appearance. For example, comfortable flats or shoes over your daily sneakers.
  4. Accessorize Thoughtfully: As mentioned earlier, accessories can really elevate a casual outfit. Consider adding festive accessories like statement jewelry, bold scarves, or a stylish watch to enhance your look without going overboard.

Don’ts:

  1. Overdress or Underdress: Avoid extremes on the formality scale. Overdressing can make you feel out of place in a casual setting, while underdressing can certainly leave you uncomfortable …or outside of an event.
  2. Overly Flashy Accessories: While accessories can enhance your outfit, you can also end up overdoing it. Try to avoid overly flashy or distracting accessories that may draw attention away from your overall look. Opt for tasteful choices that complement your attire.
  3. Experiment with Uncomfortable Footwear: While stylish footwear is essential, avoid choosing shoes that sacrifice comfort. You want to be able to enjoy the festivities without the discomfort of pinched toes or sore feet. Select footwear that is both stylish and comfortable for the occasion. Or be sure to have worn them previously. Breaking in shoes can really make a difference. (Many of us are shaking our heads in unison since we’ve been there.)
  4. Forget to Check for Wardrobe Malfunctions: Before heading out, do a quick check for any wardrobe malfunctions. Ensure that everything is in place, and there are no unexpected surprises that might make you feel self-conscious during the party. This proactive step can save you from potential awkward moments. That’s why they make garment tape and other helpful fashion tools. Trust in them!

Dry Clean Dress Shirt Cost: How Much Does It Cost & Is It Worth It?

September 17, 2023 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

(Updated July 3, 2026)

Most people searching for the cost to dry clean a dress shirt are trying to answer more than one question. They are wondering about the dry cleaning cost. Do they need to be professionally cleaned? And how often?

The answer depends on several factors, including the shirt’s fabric, construction, and level of wear. Luxury dress shirts, custom-made shirts, and delicate fabrics benefit from professional care. You have additional options with your everyday shirts.

With more than 60 years of experience, we’re happy to explain what affects the cost and when professional cleaning makes sense.

How Much Does It Cost to Dry Clean a Dress Shirt?

The price range to dry clean a dress shirt varies based on several factors, including your dry cleaner’s location, the shirt’s fabric, and the level of service provided. In major metropolitan areas like New York City, prices are often higher than the national average because of labor costs and the specialized care many garments require.

Some cleaners also offer multiple finishing options. This can range from machine finishing to fully hand-finished dry cleaned shirts.

Rather than focusing solely on price ranges, it’s important to consider the value of professional garment care. An experienced cleaner can help preserve the fabric, maintain the shirt’s shape, and extend its lifespan.

What Affects the Cost of Cleaning a Dress Shirt?

Several factors influence the final price:

  • Fabric type (cotton, linen, silk, blends)
  • Designer or custom shirts
  • Heavy staining
  • Special finishing requests
  • Hand pressing
  • Button protection or replacement
  • Pickup and delivery services

Premium shirts often require more attention and finishing time than standard business shirts. With so many factors in mind, Hallak Cleaners offers three levels of shirt laundry. Most dress shirts require only the basic level. Specialty fabric and custom button-downs may require a higher level. (Some clients also prefer the highest tier due to their own preferences.)

men's shirt laundering, photo of different shirts including green, purple, gray, blue and gold

Should You Dry Clean Every Dress Shirt?

Not necessarily.

Some dress shirts can be professionally laundered rather than dry cleaned. Others, particularly luxury, structured, or delicate shirts, require dry cleaning.

Always check the clothing label first for its instructed care.

If you’re unsure, ask your cleaner. A reputable cleaner will recommend the most appropriate method rather than automatically dry cleaning every shirt. Even as professionals, our cleaning department reads every care label prior to care.

Did You Know?
Professional garment care pricing is not always based on how ‘dirty’ an item is. In many cases, pricing reflects the time, skill, equipment, and finishing techniques required to properly clean and press each item. (This especially holds true for a wedding dress, pleated clothing, and other pieces.)

How Often Should You Clean a Dress Shirt?

Most dress shirts should be cleaned after one or two wears, depending on how they’re used.

Ask yourself:

  • Did you wear it all day?
  • Was it a hot or humid day?
  • Did you wear an undershirt?
  • Are there visible stains?
  • Does the collar show perspiration or body oils?

The cleaner the shirt remains between wears, the longer its fabric and finish are likely to last. Spring and summer months typically mean you will be dry cleaning your shirt after each use.

Why Does It Cost More to Clean a Women’s Dress Shirt?

Many people are surprised to learn that a women’s dress shirt may cost more to clean than a men’s dress shirt. While women’s shirts often use less fabric, the difference in price is usually due to the finishing process.

Many men’s dress shirts are designed with standardized sizing that allows them to be finished on specialized shirt pressing equipment. These machines help create a crisp, professional finish while improving efficiency.

Women’s dress shirts are often designed with more tailored silhouettes, darts, curved seams, smaller proportions, or unique fashion details. Because of these design elements, many cannot be safely or properly finished on automated pressing equipment.

Instead, they require extensive hand finishing by a skilled presser. Each shirt is individually pressed by hand to ensure the collar, cuffs, sleeves, and body maintain their intended shape.

While hand finishing takes more time, it provides greater attention to detail. An expert finisher preserves the fit and appearance of the garment. It is truly an art.

Professional Dress Shirt Cleaning Cost and Frequency

Professional shirt care isn’t simply about keeping a dress shirt clean. It’s about preserving its appearance, fit, and longevity. Whether you wear dress shirts every day or only for special occasions, understanding the cost of professional cleaning helps you make informed decisions about caring for your wardrobe.

If you have questions about the best cleaning method for your shirts, speak with an experienced garment care professional.

Home laundering may cost less initially, but repeated washing can lead to fading, shrinking, and premature wear depending on the fabric and washing method. While you may think a dry cleaner simply wants your business, we really are on the side of your wardrobe. We want to keep your clothing looking great wear after wear.

It depends on the shirt. Some shirts are designed for professional laundering, while others benefit from a professional dry cleaner. Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions especially when they show ‘ dry-clean only ‘.

Professional cleaners can often reduce or remove collar stains and body oils using specialized stain treatment. Results depend on how long the stain has been present and the fabric involved. Stubborn stains (like armpit yellowing) may require an actual wet cleaning aka restoration.

New York Fashion Week Street Style (Updated 8/2024)

September 13, 2023 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

During the months of September and February, New York shines a little bit brighter whether it is New York Fashion Week street style or the couture fashion hitting the runways. With Labor Day behind us, it is time to get back to the fashin.

Why is New York Fashion Week Important

Before jumping into the street style side of things, why is NYFW important overall? It’s not just an event. Fashion Week is a celebration of art, innovative designs, and self-expression.

  1. Innovation. Worldwide fashion designers flock to New York City to showcase their latest collection. Trends are born and boundaries are pushed.
  2. Diversity. Throughout NYFW, diversity is celebrated in all its forms. Various cultures, backgrounds, and styles converge to promote a continuous push to further promote inclusivity.
  3. Trendsetting. What you see during New York Fashion Week will dictate the upcoming seasons. Even if you aren’t a fashion designer collector, these trends spill into every price point. The whole fashion industry takes its cues and inspiration from these runway shows.
  4. Iconic. There is always a huge buzz – and it’s because there is sure to be so many iconic moments. Former super models, models making their special debut, avant-garde fashion, celebrity sightings…what more can you ask for?
  5. Inspiration. New York Fashion Week is the ultimate time to inspire fashion designers, future students, and fashionistas to express themselves through personal style.

New York Fashion Week Street Style

Yes, the elaborate (and sometimes minimalist) runway shows are awe-inspiring and something to talk about. Each runway show is captivated through fashion bloggers, news articles, and a flurry of photos. But what’s happening around the runway is also very alluring.

When NYFW rolls around, we are also counting down to see what people will be wearing to the runways shows. Street style is just as important – and sometimes even more so since it can be more attainable.

  1. Real-World Inspiration: Love runway fashion, but maybe you don’t have the lifestyle to compliment it? Many people find themselves in the same predicament. Street style showcases a more relatable version of fashion inspiration.
  2. Diverse Representation: NYFW street style highlights a wide range of styles, cultures, ages, and backgrounds. And that’s what is so beautiful about fashion. When it reflects the rich tapestry of New York City’s fashion scene, it ends up serving as a source of inspiration for people from all walks of life.
  3. Trendspotting: Fortunately, street style photographers capture every emerging trend and fashion innovation that may not have made it to the runway yet. From these looks, fashion lovers and designers use celebrity street style to identify trends that should not go unnoticed.

Best Street Style at NYFW

When we think of Fashion Week, there are two things that come to mind: runway fashion and celebrity fashion.

Before the runway shows even start, photographers are lined up to see which celeb will be in attendance – and what will they be wearing. (Of course once inside, it will be who capturing who is sitting in the very coveted front row.)

Whether they are supporting their favorite fashion designer or garnering publicity, celebrities are an integral part of NYFW.  And if you love fashion as much as us, you are here for all of it.

End of the Summer Fashion Tips

August 10, 2023 by Donna Serino Leave a Comment

End of Summer Packing Tips

With the end of the summer just a few weeks away, you are most likely trying to make the most of your time.

This could mean a trip to your summer home, a big all-out trip, or spending time with local friends. When it comes to fashion, it doesn’t really matter what you are actually doing. You simply want to look and feel your best.

End of Summer Packing Made Easy

For those traveling (even a short distance), packing can be stressful!

Before you even start, take a few minutes to consider what you will need. Take into consideration the following:

  • Location’s weather (and its possibilities)?
  • How active will you be?
  • Amount of pool/beach time?
  • Any formal events included?
  • What level of comfort is needed for any travel time?

All of these questions may seem obvious, but we have all been stuck missing that one (or few) item. Why stress when you’re away? Although we love a reason to shop, it’s better to be prepared.

In addition to your garments, it is important to consider those little details. The right undergarments, accessories, footwear, and tools. Yes, tools. Even with the most expert packer, wrinkles can happen. That’s why we love a personal steamer. Fortunately, there are plenty of travel options to choose from.

Additional Packing Tips

If you do not have the patience of stress level to care for items on vacation, choose your garments wisely. You may also find these next tips helpful in creating a versatile vacation wardrobe.

  • Light, summer fabrics tend to wrinkle less
  • Prints show less wrinkles (and they look great!)
  • Mix-and-match solids to go together or pair with prints
  • Neutral shoes and accessories

Before heading out the door, do you lay your outfits for a clear vision? Or are you a toss and go kind-of-person. If the latter, Hallak strongly encourages you to take that extra time in planning ahead.  With the added time, you can take care of those alterations, spot-clean any stained item, freshen up that suit, etc. There are so many benefits!

Pressed for time prior to your trip? Schedule your pick-up.  Hallak will swing by to pick up any dry cleaning or wash-and-fold. Questions about fabric care or our services? Ask away. Our team is here to help!
